Teaching Project Summary
NURS 402 – Career Pathway Development
Purpose of Assignment
The purpose of this assignment is to provide the student with the opportunity to summarize - in detail - the development, implementation, and evaluation of an instructional intervention for a specific client or professional group.
Student Approach to Assignment
Shortly before I took NUR 402, there had been an incident where a nurse had received in report that a patient would receive a blood transfusion. The blood unit was obtained and was about to be transfused, but during two-RN check-off, it was found that there was no order to transfuse the unit. While no harm reached the patient, I thought it would be a good time to review the basics of blood transfusion, the hospital policies concerning blood transfusion, and blood products. I felt both the newer nurses would benefit from the information and experienced nurses would benefit from reviewing the hospital policies. I decided to do an in-service with return demonstration and a quiz for reinforcement and evaluation.
Reason for Inclusion of this Assignment in the Portfolio
This assignment represents one of my interests in nursing: education and staff development. It brought me through the steps of preparing an education session. I identified a need, assessed for knowledge, created a teaching plan, performed a lecture, and evaluated the effectiveness of my teaching. This also represents an oral project that I have done with the audience of my co-workers.
Core Competencies
Critical Thinking
Nursing Practice
Communication
Teaching
Research
Leadership
Professionalism
Culture
How My Teaching Skills Have Improved
This teaching project was probably the project that I was most invested in during this program. Before my project here, the most education that I had been involved in was when I dispense advice to newer RNs or when I explain something to a patient who asks a question off-hand. The education process is very involved in the nursing field and it requires critical thinking to identify a need for learning. Then, appropriate planning has to be made and tailored to the target audience. A lesson plan should involve several techniques in order to appeal to different types of learning styles. Finally, learning needs to be evaluated and reinforced. This process can be challenging as needs and motivation differs between learners, but success is rewarding.
